Artist Reception August 24 |
On August 24th from 5 to 7pm the Capitol Arts Gallery hosts an Opening Reception for featured Lake Almanor area artists Mary Jane Bagshaw, Barbara Ricau Mac Arthur and Sylvia Smith. As part of each changing exhibition the gallery also regularly displays a diversity of work by the many and talented Plumas Arts member artists in a range of prices accessible to all persons. |
Mary Jane Bagshaw, a California native, graduated form Fresno State with degrees in Fine Art and Education. Her love of the outdoors came from the many visits to her grandparents ranch in Sierra Valley (The M. Guidici Ranch near Chilcoot.) Her love of the outdoors has taken her traveling and hiking through the back country of the Western United States and has taught her to appreciate and connect with the changing patterns and color in the land.
Many of her landscapes are place rich with fond memories. Her painting media of choice are oils and pastels. Oils, applied with a palette knife, provide pure colors and feels direct, much like sculpting. Pastels give both and intensity of color and a softness inherent to the medium. Her work is frequently displayed in juried shows such as The mustard Festival in Napa and salute to the Arts in Sonoma. |

| Barbara Ricau Mac Arthur's appreciation of art began in early childhood. After studying art at the University of Mississippi and at the John McCrady Art School in New Orleans, she worked with oils, acrylics and watercolor. After lengthy travel in Europe, Barbara became an international flight attendant, which led to two exhibits in New York City while based there. She received awards in juried shows in the Sacramento valley while she and husband, Bob, raised their family there. The mountains offer a whole new world to paint. She exhibits landscapes and wildlife paintings in the Lake Almanor basin at the Backroom Gallery in Chester, the Capital Arts Center in Quincy, Red House Art gallery in Graeagle, painting in her home studio and on commission, painting portraits of people, pets, homes and landscapes. |
Sylvia Smith is a self-taught artist who continues to hone her skills with workshops and classes by well-known professional artists. After over 20 years of painting in oils, watercolors are now her painting media of choice because she admires their glow and transparency. Retired from a 34-year career in customer service, Sylvia now pursues her love of watercolor as a full time artist. Many of her paintings feature birds, wildlife and local landscapes. She and her husband split their time between the mountains of Lake Almanor and the desert in Bermuda Dunes near Palm Springs; both beautiful areas providing inspiration for many of her paintings. She is a Member of the Plumas Arts Gallery; Coachella Valley Watercolor Society; and Desert Field Mice.
For this exhibition Sylvia brings her latest series of "Tropical Florals." The inspiration for the tropical series is a recent trip to Kona, Hawaii this past as well as some local landscapes. Check her blogsite for additional information. |

| All of these women are members of members of the Feather River Fine Arts Guild (functioning in association with Plumas Arts) and Back-Room Gallery Artists Co-op in Chester as well as Plumas Arts and have participated in Art Around the Lake, which brought over 200 visitors and raised funds for art in local schools. |
