Plumas Arts cultivating culture & community
Plumas Arts features Student Art

Plumas Arts is proud to present the artwork of talented Plumas County students with an opening reception Friday, April 5 2013 at the Capitol Arts Gallery, 525 Main St. in Quincy from 5PM to 7PM. This show will feature pieces done by the students of QHS art teacher Danielle DeBoever and a group of "Zentangles" created by Portola students of Marian Haid, a teacher with the Artists in the School program, coordinated by Plumas Arts with funding from California Arts Council Artists in the Schools grant and the Plumas County Office of Education.

Ms. DeBoever's students will show work in a variety of media, ranging from pencil to acrylic paint. In talking with her students, Ms. DeBoever shares that many of the kids love working with pencil or ink because of the degree of detail and shading that can be achieved, as well as for the ease of use. Acrylic paint is also a favorite for the vivid colors. "I like acrylics because they have vibrant colors and detail that bring life to my art," says one student.
Her students are inspired by everything from our beautiful Sierra Nevada landscape to childhood memories, to an urge to capture mental images. Says one student " I like to work from whatever images I can create in my mind and try to put them to paper." Another student reports " If I see something I like... I want to draw it myself, put my own spin on it, and just keep it forever."

Marian Haid's Portola students each created "zentangles," or "tangles." What is a zentangle? It is a way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with improving eye-to-hand coordination and fine motor skills. "The kids love the freedom they have within the structure and they learn about line, pattern, scale and visual rhythm, which are some of the foundations of art," explains Ms. Haid. "You start by drawing a defined space that then is filled section by section with patterns." The resulting artwork is dynamic, colorful and full of movement
The Capitol Arts Center is open Wednesdays through Fridays from 11AM to 5:30PM. Along with the student art, it features the artwork of local and regional artists, as well as gifts and jewelry. For more information call (530) 283-3402
